We’re getting better at content marketing, but we’ve still got a long way to go. SocialTimes put together a top five list of the most common mistakes made in content marketing, asking social media experts what their take is on this minefield. I was asked to contribute my thoughts on each of these five points, discussing why they linger and what we can do to beat them for good.

The biggest mistake is thinking that content marketing just doesn’t apply to your business. It does apply, no matter how visible your online presence is. If you’re not sharing and engaging online, you’re missing out on the majority of your consumers (if not all of them). This simply isn’t a sustainable approach to business anymore.

There’s also the problem of forgetting about SEO altogether, or not keeping up with the best practices. If you’re online, and you have to be engaged with SEO, and you have to be following SEO. Plus, it’s an evolving set of practices, so if you’re stuck with old school strategies you might be doing more harm than good. More recently, failing to treat video like content (it is!) has become problematic.
